Colorado Springs

From the afternoon to the evening of Wednesday, May 10, the Colorado area, with a population of 166,208 and including 61,800 homes, was heavily affected by hail storms with the designated status of Major damage and reports of hail sizes up to 2”.

This area was previously impacted during June, July, Aug of 2022 with significant scattered damage with hail up to 3.25” in size.

Denver

In the evening on Tuesday, May 9, and through the following day, Denver reported catastrophic damage with hail size as large as 3.25”. This was one of the biggest hailstorms reported in recent years.

Fort Collins

In the Fort Collins region, from the afternoon of Tuesday, May 9, 2023 to the early morning of Wednesday, May 10, hail reports showed sizes of up to 1.75” with scattered damage and a total of 8 hail reports affecting a population 239,141 and 92,562 homes.

Strasburg

To Colorado’s east, just beyond Bennett, the town of Strasburg cleared hail this May with snowplows. A rare sight during spring! Flights at Denver International Airport were canceled due to severe weather storms, and a tornado was reported in Morgan County close to 6 pm that same afternoon.

Other US states hail reports

Arkansas

Little Rock, Jonesboro, Harrison, Fayetteville, and El Dorado were among several areas impacted on May 9th and 10th, additionally, Fort Smith and close surrounding areas were impacted through April 5th,15th, and 20th with scattered damage and hail size up to 2”.

Illinois

Peoria and Bloomington experienced major hailstone damage at the end of March, with hail measuring up to 3.75”.  Through May the region also was impacted on serval days by scattered damage with hail ranging from 1.25” to 2.50”.

Alabama

Montgomery and Troy, and its surrounding areas on May 18th were impacted by scattered damage and hail ranging in size up to 2” . Additionally, through April both regions received scattered damaged by hail storms, and from the early morning of Sunday, March 26th, Montgomery was affected by major damage with 3.75” hail and 31 hail reports.

According to the National Weather Service (National Oceanic and atmosphere administration), in the USA, estimating hail size can be done fairly easily by considering everyday objects you are familiar with.

PRO TIP: If you want to photograph (or video) hailstorms to send to weather services in your area or nationally, take photos with a ruler, coins, golf balls or other items (shown in the above table) to give a good size comparison. Avoid holding hail in your hands or next to marbles.

Why say no to marbles? Marbles (or hands) aren’t all of equal size; they vary considerably.

When taking photos of hail, to represent size, use a ruler to accurately and visually represent the correct size.
